And They Deserve(d) to Die

Yes. I’m talking about the fools who thought it was a great idea to ride out Hurrican Ike.ike.jpg

Think I’m being harsh? Well when I read things like this, how can I not be. From the AP:

Steven Rushing, a commercial fishmerman, tried to ride out the storm with his wife and several family members, including his pregnant 17-year-old daughter, in their one-story brick home on Galveston Island.

Early Saturday, they watched the water rise and donned life jackets. When the water reached the TV, about 4 feet high, Rushing’s plan was to kick out a window so they could tie themselves to a tree and await rescue.

But then he noticed a sudden calm, apparently the hurricane’s eye passing over. He loaded his family into a 17-foot ski boat and headed for the San Luis resort, the headquarters for emergency personnel about 20 blocks away. It took 20 minutes to float 16 blocks before the boat ran aground. Then the Rushings sprinted for safety, guided by lights from police responding to a 911 call made from the boat.

“I’m drained. I’m beat up,” Rushing said later Saturday morning. “My family is traumatized. I kept them here, promising them everything would be alright, but this is the real deal and I won’t stay no more.”

What idiot rides out a 900 mile storm with his wife and his pregnant 17-year-old daughter? Really, what dumb-ass does that? Please tell me?

According to the same article, folk are ringing the emergency numbers off the hook and being told they will have to wait as there is no way to reach them. They were calling at the height of the hurricane begging to be rescued. What the hell? They told you to get your ass out the way. They told you staying meant certain death.

And you stayed.

So guess what…that means you’re on your own ’till someone can come and get you. And to be honest, you should be left to fend for yourself because you were told to leave and didn’t, even those who may not have had a way out, assistance was offered (unlike with Katrina), so there was no reason for anyone to stay.

No one.

Your staying is on you. Amazing how folk talk personal responsibility about everything else but the ish that really matters, like not believe you’re stronger than mother nature and getting the hell out of the way when she comes barreling down on your island.

Not only that, but you’re endangering the lives of the rescue workers who have to come and search for your dumb ass. What the hell? Read the article…something like half the population of the affected area STAYED. HALF. So now someone else may die or get seriously injured trying to save you ’cause you want to play Superman. Like I say…they deserve(d) to die.

Maybe in their death, other folks will learn that when they tell you to evacuate…get the hell out.
