Obama is the candidate of the financial institutions, they put up a lot of money to get him elected, don't expect him to not serve their interests, he is their man in the White House, not ours. He ran a brilliant campaign that persuaded Americans that he was the candidate for change, thats what people wanted to hear. It's like daddy Bush when he said "no new taxes" then got elected and immideatly raised taxes. Obama has moved ever so slightly to the center compared to the neo-fascist Bush administration. But very little has really changed and very little will change. The economy may get much worse but neither the Democrats or Republicans are in the business of change.

I think we need to open our minds to new ways of thinking about essential industry, nationalization is so unpopular because it’s what people call 'government control'. Well, if we actually had a democracy then what we would be talking about wouldn’t be called nationalization but democratization of a previously privately held corporation to a now publicly owned and democratically operated industry. I know language such as that is not welcome in the American lexicon. But desperate times call for rational measures.

Also, the outrage over these bonuses is good and dandy and all - but what about the talk about how AIG spent our money we gave them. They essentially booked billions of dollars overseas, to bail out other global banks. This was announced the same day as the bonuses were, but we only hear about the bonuses in the MSM.

Great post. I tend to agree. While I'm not a fan of the bailouts in general, and I'm not a fan of us telling businesses how they can and can't run (including how much to pay who), I think if we are going to use taxpayer money to bail them out, we should get some say.

And if he's really outraged, let's see him do something about it.

The same thing with the stimulus package. It's really easy to meet with Congressional Republicans, put out the press release and pretend to work in a bipartisan fashion. But if that had actually happened, wouldn't he have been able to push changes so that at least one Republican voted for it?

By the way, I'm adding your sight to both of my blogrolls. Feel free to check out my blogs and link back if you'd like. Thanks!

If the government steps in, here's what they need to do: Reign in the goddamned fees! Banks now make the majority of their money by screwing their customers over with fees. They see how much money you've got going in and coming out and they time how things clear so you get zinged, they take your money and you get zinged again. It's criminal, and they get away with it all the time.

Yeah, I have to agree with a lot of the comments I've read here. Not the best choice of terms for sure, even if meant somewhat tongue in cheek. Also, count me in as those who see a BIG difference in a word depending on who uses it. Reclamation of offensive words by minority groups is one way to remove the power from the word. It doesn't make if ok for you to use it or cry "no fair".

@politicalanimal

I didn't make your point.

Because the oppressed choose to take the language of the oppressor and make it their own doesn't mean it's okay for everyone else to. Particularly those in the majority who created the offensive word to begin with.

The world isn't fair...and anytime I hear non-black/minority people make the argument "Well, if I can't say it no one can," it just reminds me of a kid having a temper tantrum, "Well she did it why can't I."

If you can't understand the difference black folks saying ni--ger and white folks saying it, then you're in need of a real history lesson on this country and its treatment of anyone they considered "other."
